Every piece of botanical art that leaves The Pettler Farm carries with it weeks of careful, patient work — and a little bit of magic. If you've ever wondered how a living bloom becomes a timeless work of art, we're pulling back the curtain on our process from field to frame.
It Starts in the Garden
We harvest flowers at their peak — usually in the early morning when blooms are freshest and moisture is lowest. Timing matters enormously. A flower picked even a day too late can lose its color vibrancy during pressing. We grow many of our botanicals right here on the farm, selecting varieties known for their pressing qualities: larkspur, statice, pansies, ferns, and our signature wildflower mixes.
The Pressing Process
Fresh flowers are carefully arranged between layers of absorbent botanical paper and placed in our flower presses. This isn't a quick process — proper pressing takes anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks depending on the flower's water content and thickness. We check and replace the paper regularly to ensure even drying without mold or discoloration.
Patience is everything here. Rushing the press is the fastest way to ruin a bloom.
Selecting and Composing
Once dried, each pressed flower is inspected for color, shape, and integrity. Only the best make it into our frames. Then comes the most creative part: composition. We arrange and rearrange botanicals by hand, building each piece like a painting — balancing color, texture, scale, and negative space until the arrangement feels just right.
No two pieces are ever identical. That's not a limitation — it's the whole point.
Framing for Longevity
We use archival-quality materials throughout: acid-free backing, protective glass, and enclosed frames to protect against damage and humidity. With proper care, a well-made pressed flower piece can retain its color and beauty for decades.
